The McDonnell Douglas MD-80 is a series of narrow-body, twin-engine airliners developed from the DC-9 family, known for their rear-mounted engines and five-abreast seating. It was a popular aircraft, with almost 1,200 built between 1979 and 1999. The MD-80 series includes the MD-81, MD-82, MD-83, MD-87, and MD-88. While production ended in 1999, some airlines continue to operate the MD-80, often for cargo or specialized roles. American Airlines retired its last MD-80 aircraft on September 4, 2019. At the time of retirement, the airline had a fleet of 26 MD-80 aircraft.
